How to Achieve Success with a Winning Mindset
What Makes a Winning Mindset?
In my work as a mindset and strategy specialist, often I’m asked: “What constitutes a winning mindset?” In my experience, there’s no single all-encompassing answer to this question. However, one essential element is commitment.
When I graduated from University, one of my first mentors gave me a beautifully framed copy of a quote by famous German philosopher Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe, to use as a constant reminder of what is possible with commitment and a winning mindset.
“Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back, always ineffectiveness. Concerning all acts of initiative and creation, there is one elementary truth the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans: that the moment one definitely commits oneself, then providence moves too.
“All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred. A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one’s favour all manner of unforeseen incidents, meetings and material assistance which no man could have dreamed would have come his way.
“Whatever you can do or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius, power and magic in it. Begin it now.”

The Power of Commitment
My first experience with this principle occurred shortly after receiving this gift from my mentor. I dreamed of going on a one-year overseas experience – the time-honoured “OE”! And the time felt right as I had just finished my studies. There was one big problem. I had next to no money and no real prospects for earning in four months anywhere near what I would need to make the trip. I had no clue how I could accomplish it. Regardless, I bought the plane ticket and committed to getting there, somehow.
I returned to an old job waiting tables. I worked hard but soon realised the money that I needed to make the trip was still a long way off.
A Winning Mindset Opens the Door to Opportunities
One day, while out walking, I spotted a job advertisement in the window of a fine dining restaurant. I had never worked in a fine dining establishment before, but I committed myself to apply. I got the job and was able to double the number of tips I had earned previously.
Shortly after, a colleague introduced me to a second opportunity at another restaurant where I could make equal pay and work double shifts several days per week. All of a sudden, I was on target to raise all the money I needed.
Witnessing the Power of Commitment
The lease on my apartment ended, and I had to move out with six weeks left before my trip. This was the incident that brought home for me the power of commitment.
I had trouble finding a place to move to for such a short period. Also, my jobs were over an hour apart from each other, making it a challenge to manage the travel.
I mentioned my situation to a few friends. As it happened, one of them needed a housesitter for precisely the six weeks I required as he was getting married and going away on his honeymoon.
If this wasn’t enough to convince me of the power of commitment, his house was halfway between my two jobs. It provided the perfect solution. I was able to successfully achieve and surpass the financial goal I had set for my travels.
Pursuing Your Dreams and Goals
Since that experience, I have seen the power of commitment in action many times, for my clients and myself. It is unfailing. Though there may be challenges along the way, I regularly witness the successes of those with. a winning mindset who make a wholehearted commitment to achieving a goal or dream.
As Goethe said, “Boldness has genius, power and magic in it”
